The Three Lions to Begin UEFA Euro 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium

The England national team will commence their UEFA Euro 2028 journey at the Manchester City’s stadium, on the condition that they secure the relatively straightforward qualification for a tournament staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Ireland.

Manchester City’s home ground has not hosted an England men’s fixture since the spring of 2016, when the Turkish team were defeated 2-1 in a friendly, but is expected to host the Three Lions for their inaugural game on June 10, 2028.

The team are scheduled to play their concluding group fixtures at the national stadium, but, in the event of winning Group B, their knockout stage opener would be held at St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean beginning the elimination stage at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Competition Launch and Demonstration

The tournament was unveiled at an gathering in a London landmark on Wednesday evening. Key representatives from the tournament organizers and the host football associations were barracked as they arrived the location by approximately 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who called for Israel’s national side to be removed from global football because of the Gaza crisis.

Placards were raised with messages saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters shouted: “Kick Israel out.”

Event Schedule

The opening game of the tournament will be held at the the national stadium of Wales in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a game that will include the Welsh team if they qualify.

Wembley will host the two semi-final matches and the title decider, which will be played on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5pm.

It is hoped that an afternoon start, which will also be used for European club finals from the following campaign, will cater to families and help engage a wider spectrum of audiences.

Qualifying Teams

The Irish team are due to play their first game at the Dublin stadium and the Tartan Army would follow suit at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

The national sides of all four hosts will participate in the preliminary stage; two reserved places will be set aside for any that fail to qualify for the finals through the standard process.

Stadiums and Knockout Stage

Aston Villa’s stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium round out the nine tournament locations. All will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the last eight played at every host’s main arena.

The qualifying draw will be conducted in Belfast, which was removed as a host city last year when it became clear the proposed venue could not be upgraded in time, on December 6, 2026.

Leadership Comment

“The event will be a championship for the fans and a festival of everything we value about the football – its passion and power to bring people together.”

More than three million tickets, a unprecedented number for a UEFA European Championship, are anticipated to be made available to supporters.
