From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a diverse cast of heroes, and a exciting storyline showcasing divine entities, demons, and dark forces growing in power within the city.
Warning: Spoilers for the latest installment of Campaign 4 follow below.
The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed
Episode 3 finished on a dramatic pause and introduced the premier party of adventurers who will separate from the main group to begin their separate journey, apart from the remaining groups.
The Soldiers table features Teor (played by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).
The Reason for Division
Given a large ensemble, it was clear from the beginning that maintaining everyone at the same party would be unworkable.
Hence, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Prelude, intertwining the individual narratives before branching into three smaller tables: Fighters, Schemers, and Explorers.
The Nature of the Warrior Group
As described by the DM, the warrior group is for adventurers who enjoy a traditionally charged battle-oriented story mode where diplomatic options are rare.
Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might look mismatched, but the actions of the third episode make it clear why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the warrior group.
Motivations for Departure
For one thing, the team understands precisely where to proceed after a violent opening clash with The Crow Keepers.
Casimir of Thjazi—whose death started the campaign’s events—exploited The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, breaking into the secret base, striking the character, and taking all the enchanted items to sell off.
Casimir then settled his liabilities and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.
Character Drivers
Secondly, each adventurer has a personal reason to leave the city the urban setting:
- Thimble, as the close ally and closest confidant, seeks retribution.
- The adventurer has experience in the northern area and advises that it is a dangerous location.
- The strong character and The cleric, having resisted his house’s orders to execute Teor and instead freed him, have no safe haven.
- Yet, their position as key figures in House Halovar could enable the team enter places they usually can’t.
- Moreover, The grateful character swore a life debt to The savior for his deliverance and will now go with him anywhere.
Wanted and Hunted
In addition, all of them are wanted by the powers that govern Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making staying in the city dangerous:
- The agile adventurer and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
- The warrior and The cleric turned against the influential house and the army of fiends they are allied with.
- Teor is targeted for elimination by the clan.
This results in them no alternative but to head to the northern region in quest for the traitor.
