The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a girl containing multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate souls, all possessing unique anxieties and drives. These entities can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, though other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a desolate church.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms where their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one standing might be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
