Teacher Killed and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at School in Nigeria
Weapon-carrying attackers have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a educational institution for young women in north-western Nigeria, police reports indicate.
The armed faction invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on Monday, authorities reported.
The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their living quarters, authorities disclosed.
One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Witnesses reported a considerable contingent of armed individuals, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.
Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the gunmen subsequently marched a number of girls into adjacent wilderness.
The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.
