Russian President Vladimir Putin Pledges Steady Crude Oil Shipments to India in Rebuff of US Pressure
During a defiant message to the United States, President Vladimir Putin stated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to maintain “unbroken” deliveries of energy resources to India. The announcement came when Putin and Modi met in the Indian capital and asserted their partnership were “resistant to external pressure.”
A Signal Aimed at the West
The statement, made on Friday, was widely seen to be a direct challenge at the United States and its allies, who have repeatedly attempted to pressure New Delhi into reducing its historical relations with Moscow. This comes is in response to previous American measures, notably the imposition of trade penalties on India because of its buying of Russian oil.
“Russia is a dependable exporter of fuel and everything needed for the growth of India’s industry,” he remarked. “Russia is prepared to persist in securing the steady flow of fuel for the booming Indian economy.”
Prime Minister Modi, while not naming energy specifically, supported the sentiment by saying that “a stable energy base has been a strong and crucial foundation of the bilateral alliance.”
Challenging American Pressure
Before the summit, in a television interview, Putin had challenged US interference regarding India's oil imports. The president questioned, “Should America has the right to buy our uranium, how can you deny India have the equivalent access?”
The visit marked his first trip to India since the onset of the situation in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi engaged in a clear effort to display that the bond between the heads of state persisted strongly.
An Unusual Welcome
Taking an unusual move, Prime Minister Modi met Putin right off the plane. Both leaders exchanged a hearty embrace like old friends before enjoying a one-on-one meal the night before the summit.
He referred to India's alliance with Russia as “a guiding star” and noted it was “built on mutual respect and profound confidence.”
Expanding Defence and Economic Ties
Friday's talks yielded multiple significant pacts regarding military and financial collaboration. A cornerstone agreement was the finalization of an economic cooperation programme that runs to 2030, which sets a goal to boost mutual trade to one hundred billion dollars each year by the end of the decade.
Furthermore agreed to reshape their strategic cooperation. While Russia continues to be India's primary exporter of defence equipment, this role has diminished over the past decade as India works to widen its procurement.
The official release emphasized an agreement on the co-development of advanced defence platforms, although explicit reference of deals for the fifth-generation aircraft were not made.
Ultimately, both nations reiterated that in the “current complex, tense, and unpredictable global landscape, Russian-Indian ties remain strong to foreign influence.”
