The initial novel therapies for gonorrhoea in decades are being hailed as a "huge turning point" in the fight against increasingly resistant strains of the bacteria, according to scientists.

A Worldwide Public Health Issue

Gonorrhoea infections are escalating worldwide, with data suggesting more than 82 million instances each year. Particularly high rates are seen in Africa and countries within the World Health Organization's Western Pacific region, which encompasses Mongolia and China to New Zealand. Gepotidacin, developed by the drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline, also received approval in the same week. This drug, which is also used to treat urinary tract infections, was shown in trials to be able to combat antibiotic-resistant forms of the gonorrhoea bacteria.

A Novel Approach to Creation

Zoliflodacin stemmed from a unique collaborative effort for drug creation. The charitable organization GARDP worked alongside the drug firm Innoviva to bring it to fruition.
