New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core platform, was not quick to announce he would live there right away following his victory in November.

"The choice came down to the security of my family and the imperative to directing my complete efforts on enacting the affordability agenda voters supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its vibrant immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, Astoria will always live inside me and the work I do," he added.

Campaign Controversy

In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his central policy – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

But his rivals, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing despite the fact that he hails from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a place for civic gatherings, and championed significant upgrades of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting a stark contrast to his humble Astoria digs.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants consider these apartments crucial resources as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
