On the eve of his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his continued role with the club is inextricably linked to delivering trophies.
The Journey So Far: Six Years in Charge
The Spanish coach assumed control on the 20th of December in 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup triumph a short time later. However, that first major trophy stands as his only major honor since succeeding Unai Emery.
“Absolutely,” Arteta responded when questioned about his future past 2027. “But it’s about today. And a lot of things need to fall into place in the next few months as well to warrant that continuation.”
This weekend sees the landmark with a match versus Everton, the identical team Arsenal played immediately following his hiring was confirmed.
The Current Landscape
Given that chasing Manchester City set to face West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal risk losing the summit in the Premier League for the first time. Regardless of the availability issues and the high-stakes environment, Arteta believes the club's “objectives and communication” are completely changed from when he initially took over.
He pointed to the record-breaking achievements as evidence of progress. “Consider the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the standard we operate at.”
In closing, the manager stated, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has not witnessed in the past. And our aim is to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
