Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting
At least 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, officials have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.
The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the individuals who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with five in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
