European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
