Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.

They also requested that the former president be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
