American Military Executes Lethal Attack in Pacific, Leading to 4 Fatalities
According to a high-ranking defense spokesperson, the American armed forces executed a lethal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along a established narco-trafficking route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. All four male narco-terrorists were eliminated, and no US military forces were harmed.”
Context and Recent Strikes
The statement comes a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, pledging to escalate the military presence.
Only on Tuesday, the Pentagon said it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Defends Actions Amidst Scrutiny
The administration has faced increasing demands to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, officials have declined to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a success, saying it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is stretching the limits of lawful warfare.
While the administration has said the operation is about stopping drugs headed to the US, remarks from a top official appeared to suggest a broader geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff said the leader “aims to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”
This indicates the series of strikes may be linked to a push to oust Venezuela's sitting leadership.
