A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
