A group of seven alleged members of Germany's far-left group stand trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
